UFC 269: Oliveira Vs. Poirier Preview

Last week, the UFC released a trailer for UFC 269 that featured some surprising fights. The top among them is a showdown between Dustin Poirier and Charles Oliveira that will take place on December 11 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The so-called ‘titanic’ lightweight title clash has generated a lot of attention, especially after Poirier’s comments that some guys need ‘a**-whoopings’.

The main event will determine who’s the best fighter at 155 pounds. It will be Oliveira’s first title defence after he defeated Michael Chandler for the vacant lightweight belt at UFC 262. He’ll be facing one hell of a fighter in Dustin Poirier who’s looking to become the undisputed champ for the first time.

Oliveira or Poirier?

Poirier is back in the octagon after two major-money fights with Conor McGregor. He won both very early and may have possibly sent McGregor to early retirement. He’s currently on a three-win streak, with a loss suffered to Khabib Nurmagomedov before. He lost the UFC Lightweight Championship in that fight and has been looking to get a hold of it ever since.

After Nurmagomedov left the belt on the table, it was won by Charles Oliveira. He defeated Michael Chandler via TKO in May 2021 while breaking the UFC record for most finishes with 17. Oliveira is currently on a nine-match win streak so Poirier will have his hands full. Plenty of gambling sites found at Gamblers PRO are giving him the tip, but many experts are not that fast to write Poirier off.

The odds at the moment are around +135 for Oliveira and -160 for Poirier. It’s clear that Poirier is the favourite, but let’s not forget who has the belt. The fact that the defender is a rare underdog in a fight for the title makes this match a true blessing for UFC punters.

A Well-Rounded Fight

The title match between Oliveira and Poirier may be the most exciting this year. Both are well-rounded fighters that have proved their mettle in the Octagon. Oliveira may be the underdog, but he’s a fantastic submission artist and not to be taken lightly. In the past few years, he has greatly improved his striking. It was on full display against Chandler when he won the vacant belt.

When it comes to striking, Poirier is a true pro. He’s been in the UFC for over 10 years, and he’s still going strong at the age of 32. He’s a technical fighter with plenty of tricks in his bag. What many consider his top advantage is the unbreakable will. Do what you will, but Poirier will never back down.

He has a much better track record than Oliveira when it comes to beating the top dogs. In his career, Poirier has defeated McGregor twice, and has a victory over Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway, and Eddie Alvarez too. That’s why bookies have made him a favourite, but Oliveira won’t be a pushover.

That’s why we’re excited about the December 11 title defence fight, and so are most UFC fans.
