A monster card stacked with fourteen fights went down on Saturday night at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas. Anthony Smith went up against Ryan Spann in the main event in the light-heavyweight division. Ion Cuțelaba and Devin Clark competed in the co-main event. Check out all the highlights and the official results from UFC Vegas 37 below.
Hannah Goldy and Emily Whitmire opened up the card in the women’s flyweight division. Goldy struggled in the early stages in the fight finding herself on her back taking shots. As whitmire pressured for the finished Goldy was able to lock in an armbar on her rival which forced the verbal tap from Whitmire in round one.
Impa Kasanganay suffered his second knockout in three fights when Carlston Harris landed some big shots in round one. Both welterweights exchanged blows throughout the first round, Harris landed two big right hooks which put Kasanganay in the turtle position. Harris, who was born in Skeldon, Guyana, finished the fight with some ground and pound and moves to 2-0 since joining the promotion.
Erin Blanchfield put on a dominating performance over Sarah Alpar in the women’s flyweight division. Blanchfield won via unanimous decision with two judges scoring the fight 30-25 and the other 30-26. At only 22-years old Erin Blanchfield looks a real talent in the 125-pound division.
JP Buys came close with a guillotine choke in round one in his bantamweight encounter with Montel Jackson. Johnson escaped and went on to win the fight by unanimous decision. Buys was hurt on multiple occasions throughout the fight and showed great heart and determination to see the final bell.
Zhu Rong, who is the youngest fighter on the UFC roster at 21, defeated Brandon Jenkins at the final stages of their lightweight contest. Rong picked up his first win under the UFC banner after losing his debut, his record improves to 18-4.
Joaquin Buckley defeated Antonio Arroyo midway through round three to move to 13-4 inside the middleweight divison. Arroyo had the clear size advantage showcase his quick striking but seemed hesitant to let his shots go throughout the fight. Buckley took advantage when he landed two big shots on the feet and finished the fight with some hammer fists before the ref called a halt to the action.
Tony Gravely had Nate Maness hurt badly at the end of round one, just a few seconds more and the fight may very well have been stopped. Maness recovered excellently and land a hug shot of his own which sat down Gravely, Maness capitalized with some follow up shots which force the ref to step in. Both bantamweights put on a great fight.
Arman Tsarukyan put the rest of the lightweight division on notice when he dismantled Christos Giagos inside one round. The 24-year old Armenian brings his win streak to four and is knocking on the door of the top-15 of the division. I think we should get used to seeing this guy around. Fantastic talent.
Ariane Lipski put on a dominant performance enroute to winning a unanimous decision over Mandy Bohm. Lipski snapped a two-fight losing streak and the flyweight moved to 14-7 in her career.
Ion Cutelaba hurt Devin Clark in round one, Clark did well to recover but had to endure quite a lot of damage throughout the fight. Cutelaba took how the win on the judges scorecards to move to 16-6 in the 205-pound division.
UFC veteran Anthony Smith made a statement in his main event win over Ryan Spann. “Lionheart” and Spann went toe-to-toe from the starting bell and after an armbar attempt off it was Smith who drew first blood hurting Spann on the feet. A left hook started the flurry which sent Spann down the the canvas, Smith took top control an worked to the back of his rival to lock in a rear-naked choke. Both light heavyweights had words after the bell but tempers quickly cooled down. Smith called for a rematch with Aleksandar Rakić in his post fight interview.
