Daniel Dubois vs Joe Joyce: Fighter Profiles

On November 28th, Daniel Dubois and Joe Joyce, two of heavyweight boxing’s hottest prospects, will clash in a much-anticipated bout. Dubois, who is the heavy favourite in the odds on Dubois vs Joyce, will be defending his British and Commonwealth titles, whilst the vacant European Heavyweight belt will also be on the line. Much to the delight of fight fans, promoter Frank Warren revealed that the bout will not be a pay-per-view, as it will be held behind closed door.

As fight night approaches, let’s take an in-depth look at the pair’s boxing profiles. Read on to find out more!

Daniel Dubois – 15-0

Greenwich-born boxer Dubois, or ‘Triple D’, as he’s also known, is being tipped to be the next big thing in heavyweight boxing. The 23-year-old was training alongside the Great Britain Olympic team with the aim to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, he opted to turn professional instead, and, in April 2017, after striking a deal with Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, ‘DDD’ made his professional debut at the age of 19, taking on Marcus Kelly at the Manchester Arena. It was an explosive performance from Dubois, as he won via TKO within the first 35 seconds of the opening round.

Since then, ‘Dynamite’ – another nickname he has picked up, due to overwhelming power – has fought 14 times. He has won 13 of those bouts via TKO/KO, with only American Kevin Johnson taking him the distance, but the fight still went in the Londoners favour, via a unanimous decision. In his 15 fights to date, Dubois has won eight different belts, including the English Heavyweight title, the WBO Global, International and European Heavyweight belts, and the WBC Silver title. Against Joyce, who many are claiming will be his toughest opponent to date, ‘DDD’ will be defending his British and Commonwealth titles, whilst the vacant European Heavyweight belt will also be on the line.

Joe Joyce – 11-0

Unlike Dubois, the ‘Juggernaut’ had a much longer amateur career. After injuries put an end to his track and field hopes, Joyce turned to boxing, and he won the super heavyweight classes at the 2012 ABA Championship and the GB Amateur Boxing Championships, in the same year. In 2013, he won bronze at the European Amateur Boxing Championships, after being knocked out by Segei Kuzmin, whilst he was also KO’d by Hamza Beguemi at the 2013 AIBA World Boxing Championships. Joyce then won gold medals at the Commonwealth and European Games, in 2014 and 2015, respectively. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Joyce won silver, controversially losing the final, via a split decision, to Tony Yoka.

In 2017, at the age of 31, the ‘Juggernaut’ turned professional, signing with David Haye’s Hayemaker Promotions. His first bout was against fellow Briton Ian Lewison, and he won via TKO in the eighth round. After five fights with Hayemaker Promotions, and as many TKO/KO victories, Joyce signed a deal with American promoter Al Haymon. The ‘Juggernaut’ fought just three times under Al Haymon, the biggest of which was on the undercard of the first bout between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder, and during that period, he kept his unbeaten record intact – KO’ing Iago Kiladze and Joe Hanks, before beating Bermane Stiverne via TKO.

Joyce is now co-promoted by Queensberry Promotions and Ringstar Sports – beating Alexander Ustinov (TKO), Bryant Jennings (UD), and Michael Wallisch (TKO) since signing for his new promoters in April this year. In his 11 bouts, Joyce has also won the Commonwealth, WBA Continental, and WBA (Gold) heavyweight titles.
